Conventional Vehicles Compared To Electric Cars

With pollution levels continue to rise around the world, electric cars are fast becoming an attractive alternative to traditional vehicles. With global warming being one of the biggest concerns of people today, a switch to electric cars would be a huge step in improving the environment. Electric vehicles provide a greener means to travel by conserving energy rather than using precious fuels like petrol.

Making The Switch To Electric

Switching to electric cars is not only a step towards minimizing carbon emissions but also a saving for future generations. Rising fuel costs and a worldwide drive for greener initiatives are leading many industries to adopt electric cars (EVs). Electric cars usually cost around 3 cents per gallon cheaper than petrol powered vehicle at ten cents per gallon. In addition to lower fuel costs, EVs also serve as a safer option to diesel or petrol powered vehicles because of lower carbon emissions.

There are two major environmental impacts of petrol powered vehicles. The first is the environmental impact caused during combustion; carbon monoxide, methane and hydrocarbons are some of the most prominent components that form during the digestion of the fuel. These compounds are released into the atmosphere, polluting the air. The other impact of combustion is through the release of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrocarbons in the tailpipe when the petrol burns.

By contrast, the most prevalent and significant environmental impact of electric cars are carbon emissions not emitted during fuel combustion. The lack of fuel combustion emissions is attributed to the fact that an electric motor has no fuel tank or combustion chamber. Instead, the electricity is stored in batteries and is passed through wires that carry it to the battery’s terminal. The battery then releases the power during the time the vehicle is left idling. This enables the vehicle to run continuously for a long period of time on empty, despite not being run with fuel.

How Do Electric Cars Function?

This in turn allows electric cars to have much higher maximum speed, as well as better regenerations of power. Additionally, they can produce much higher torque, allowing them to propel themselves much faster than conventional vehicles. As well, the batteries have a much higher life span, offering much more driving time before requiring recharging. With regard to the latter, they also tend to outlast the lifetime of the co2 emissions, meaning that the vehicle will remain emission free for as long as possible.


Despite the fact that electric cars tend to be much safer and cleaner than conventional vehicles, they do have some drawbacks. For instance, they cannot hold a charge long enough to allow the driver to reach his destination. Also, as they are dependent on the power of the sun, they will not run on days when the sun does not rise. Another drawback is that they will not allow the driver to accelerate to high speeds, as they lack the power to do so.
